He married Mary Gleason/Gleeson before 1824 when the birth of their first child is recorded.
They are identified as the parents of the following children in the baptismal records of the Parish of Borrisokane, Killaloe Diocese, Tipperary, Ireland. Their place of residence is also listed as the village of Kyleagoonagh. In these church records, the McCarthy surname is often spelled as Carty or Carthy. This is believed to be an abbreviated format.

Patrick McCarthy was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, March 17, 1834, and is a son of Michael and Mary (Gleason) McCarthy, natives of the same county. Mr. McCarthy's father died when he was a small boy, and in 1860 his mother, with his brother Tim, came to the United States, Patrick following them three and one-half years later. They located on a farm in Center township. where Mrs. McCarthy died about 1891. Of her five children, Patrick is the only one living. The exact year of Michael McCarthy's death is not known. However, In 1853, a Mary Carty and Timothy Carty are listed in Griffith's Valuation in County Tipperary (North Riding), Barony Ormand (Lower), Parish Borrisokane, Townland Tombrickane.[8] This may be widow Mary Gleason McCarthy and her youngest son.

27 Nov 1860 Mary (50) & Tim (20) Carthy arrival aboard the ship City of Baltimore. This matches the immigration date given by son Tim's 1866 Declaration of Intent.[10]
Notes
Family tradition maintained that Stephen McCarthy, the son of Michael & Mary, was born near Nenagh, Tipperary. The baptismal records for Stephen and his siblings were located in Borrisokane Parish which is about 10 miles from Nenagh.
