Biography
John "Johan" Carver was one of Indiana's earliest pioneers. He was the son of Christian Carver 1759-1836, a Revolutionary War Veteran. Christian Carver brought his young family into the Northwest Territory to homestead. John Carver signed for his father in Cincinnati to buy land in Dearborn County (Indiana) on 11 May 1813. This land was included in the newly created county of Switzerland in 1814, becoming part of the new state of Indiana in 1816. John married Margaret Hoover (1794-1871) on 2 August 1810 in Montgomery County, Ohio. Margaret Hoover Carver was rumored to be part Indian. Their son Morgan Carver (1824-1902), and Morgan's son Ted Carver (1868-1958) continued to own and farm the land that the Carver Cemetery resides on. John Carver was only 46 years old when he passed away, a victim of Cholera, a water-born disease that killed many in the area in the 1830s.
