Biography

Calvin was born about 1778. He married Mary Holman about 1802/1803, likely in Pennsylvania, and they had at least 8 children. At some point between 1810 and 1820, the family relocated from Pennsylvania to Champaign County, Ohio, where Calvin was responsible for "laying out" the village he called "Trenton" in the early 1830s. [NB: The town was renamed "Careysville" when they applied to the federal government to establish a post office there and were told that there was already a "Trenton, Ohio," so the name was changed to Careysville, both to honor the original founder and to obtain a post office.)[1]

Calvin passed away in 1851 and is buried at Rosedale Cemetery in Champaign County, Ohio.[2] His will, signed in Champaign County on 13 June 1849 and presented for probate there on 27 Feb 1852, mentioned by name his wife, Mary Carey and son Isaac Carey (both named as Executors). Others mentioned by name were daughter Rebecca ($200), daughter Phoebe (Carey) Wilson ($5), daughter Maria (Carey) Greer ($5), daughter Elizabeth (Carey) Julian ($15), grandson Luther Reed (son of Rhonda, dec'd; $5), and heirs of deceased son Luther (already received their inheritance).[3]
