Biography

Florence was a daughter of William H. Cary and Caroline E. "Carrie" Swope. She married Paul Albert Smith, a divorcee, in 1927.[1] The couple divorced. She married Edward Bell Deery. Florence passed away in 1931.

EDWARD B. DEERY, 85, FORMER CREST PROFESSOR
Edward B. Deery, 85, of 1444 Hamilton St., Allentown, died Monday in Lehigh Valley Hospital Center. He was the husband of the late Florence E. (Carey) [sic] Deery.
A professor of education at Cedar Crest College for 14 years, he retired as department chairman in 1970. That same year, he returned as a part-time development assistant before retiring in 1972.
In 1970, Deery was chairman of the college's capital campaign drive which raised more than $21,000 for the institution's College Center.
He also was a former campus chairman for the United Way, and served on the Advisory Committee on faculty personnel and on a committee of the American Association of University Professors.
Before coming to Cedar Crest, Deery was superintendent of Darby Borough Schools, Delaware County, for eight years. While there, he was a member of the Kilgore Players and coached community plays for 10 years.
He was a former editor of the Delaware County School News and was a past corresponding secretary of the Greater Darby Chamber of Commerce.
A 1938 graduate of Muskingum College, New Concord, Ohio, Deery received his masters degree from Temple University in 1941, and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Cedar Crest in 1975.
Born in Chester Springs, Chester County, he was a son of the late George H. and Mary (Bell) Deery.
He was a member of Nativity Lutheran Church, Allentown.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was a combat intelligence officer and a public relations officer.
Surviving are nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be announced by the Mae A. Stump Funeral Home, Fleetwood. There will be no calling hours.[2]
