Research Notes

Marriage:

John Cary did not marry Abigail Allen, as first reported by Bradford Kingman, Esq. of Brookline, Mass. in History of North Bridgwater, Family Register, Vol 2.[11] The source of this information is unknown. Others followed Kingman.[6]

The original Bridgwater Vital Record did not include her name:

Cary: John Jr. and ___________ ___________ [Abigail Allen P.R. 103.] Dec. 7, 1670.[12][13]

See Note for John Cary and sources listed. Also, note the following:

Her will was probated 2/12/1730 and administered by son Benjamin and son-in-law Samuel Howland (6:353). It mentions sons Eleazer, James, Benjamin and Josiah; only daughter Abigail Howland; Jemima Cary, daughter of Josiah Cary; granddaughter Abigail Cary, daughter of John deceased; granddaughter Abigail Cary, daughter of Eleazer Cary; granddaughter Abigail Cary, daughter of Jame s Cary; granddaughter Abigail Cary, daughter of Benjamin Cary; granddaughter Abigail Howland, daughter of Abigail Howland; and grandson John, son of John Cary.

Bridgewater Vital Records: THE VITAL RECORDS OF BRIDGEWATER, MASS.  Literally transcribed from the original records, BY GEORGE ERNEST BOWMAN.[14]

Bridgewater was originally a part of Duxbury, and was incorporated as a separate town 3 June 1656. The first town clerk was John Cary, who kept the records for twenty-five years. The first book of the records was used until 1702. It is in a very dilapidated condition, many entries being incomplete, or entirely lost. Scattered among the records of town meetings are found the records of births, marriages and deaths.

Abigail Penniman was not the husband of the John Cary (1645-1721). The marriage that took place 7 Dec 1670 in Bridgewater, Plymouth Colony was to Abigail Allen: Abigail Allen in the Massachusetts, U.S., Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988 https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/81126891:2495?ssrc=pt&tid=119641404&pid=380176693540 and The New England Historical & Genealogical Register, 1847-2011 for Abigail Allen Volume 021 (1867) https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/379891:2129?ssrc=pt&tid=119641404&pid=380176693540 - She was the daughter of Samuel Allen and married John Cary December 7, 1870: John Cary, the Plymouth pilgrim - Sketch of John Cary https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/17:15744?ssrc=pt&tid=119641404&pid=380176693540 and Abigail Allen in the North America, Family Histories, 1500-2000 https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/971913:61157

She calls her ‘Abigail Carie.’ But Braintree Records (p. 719) give “‘Samuel Neale and Abigail Penniman married the 2nd mo. 18th ‘78 by Captain Mason.’” I cannot account for this apparent discrepancy.” John Cary's wife Abigail bore children to him both before and after this date. As noted in the research notes on this profile there are no other sources for the bold and completely false conclusion that John Cary did not marry Abigail Allen.

I brought a letter signed by John Cary, Clerk, Bristol, off of Ebay. Another letter is selling again signed by him for $275. It's concerning Johnathan Briggs being arrested for not paying the Willett Estate. I am trying to make out the seal.

Cary-76 and Cary-167 appear to represent the same person because: appears to be another duplicate, not the John that died as an infant

Cary-76 and Cary-163 appear to represent the same person because: Instead of a merge, this may be the John that was born and died in 1671, at 3 months old. Maybe a bit of cleaning and adding details that show on the sources
