Biography

Giovanna Cascio is born in Corleone on 24 February 1892 to Giuseppe Cascio and Angela Grizzaffi, and baptized Joanna on 29 February. Her godparents are Giovanni Scalisi and Giovanna Gennaro.[1]

The S.S. Citta di Torino sailing from Napoli, arrived 19 November 1901[2], includes:

8. Angela Grissoffi 38 (b. 1863)
9. Salvatrice Cascio 19 (b. 1882)
10. Leoluca Cascio 14 (b. 1887)
11. Maria Cascio 12 (b. 1889)
12. Giovanna Cascio 9 (b. 1892)

Rosa, 8, and Giovanni, 6, join them 19 November 1903, traveling with Leoluca Grizzoffi, 43, and Biagia Grizzoffi, 11. The Grizzoffis are joining his nephew Giocchino Crescimanno, at the same address in New York as Angela Grizzaffi, the children's mother.

In the 1905 and 1910 censuses, Giovanna appears at the correct ages with the same siblings. The head of household changes name and sex, which may be an error, but retains the same age, that of Angela Grizzaffi, wife of Giuseppe Cascio.

Giovanna appears as Jennie in the 1905 New York state census[3]:

Head Angelo Cascio M 42y Italy
Daughter Tillie Cascio F 24y Italy
Son Louis Cascio M 18y Italy
Daughter Mary Cascio F 15y Italy
Daughter Jennie Cascio F 13y Italy
Daughter Rosie Cascio F 10y Italy
Son John Cascio M 7y Italy

Giovanna appears as Genevieve in 1910 census records in the household of Angelina Cascio in New York[4]:

Head Angelina Cassio F 47 Italy
Daughter Tillie Cassio F 27 Italy
Son Louis Cassio M 22 Italy
Daughter Mary Cassio F 20 Italy
Daughter Genevieve Cassio F 18 Italy
Daughter Rose Cassio F 16 Italy
Son John Cassio M 12 Italy
Nephew John Gritsafo M 26 Italy

In the 1920 census, Tillie and Leoluca have married and moved out, and nephew John Grizzaffi is replaced with cousins Charlie and Philip Grizzaffi.[5] Gina Spatafora, a descendant of Giovanni, suggests the nephews living with Angelina are likely Francesca Cascio's sons Giovanni, Carmelo and Filippo.[6]

Head Angelina Cascio F 55 Italy
Daughter Mary Cascio F 27 Italy
Daughter Jennie Cascio F 25 Italy
Daughter Rosie Cascio F 24 Italy
Son John Cascio M 22 Italy
Cousin Charlie Grizzaffi M 35 Italy
Cousin Philip Grizzaffi M 32 Italy
