Biography

Carmela Cascio is born 7 August 1816 and baptized the next day. She is the daughter of Ciro Cascio and Rosalia Cannella. Her godparents are Paolo and Anna Pennino, son and mother.

Carmela marries Vincenzo Maniscalco on 18 November 1838. Her father has died by this time.

Carmela and Vincenzo have at least eight children: Calogera (1839), two daughters named Bernarda (1843 and 1845), Bernardo (1846), Rosaria (1849), Laura (1851), Ciro (1854), and Maria (1858).

The Children of Carmela and Vincenzo

The names of their children are somewhat unconventional. Instead of naming the first daughter after Vincenzo's mother, as is traditional, they named their first daughter Calogera.

Calogera is born and baptized on 12 September 1839. Her godparents are Leoluca and Francesca Paternostro, a married couple.

After Calogera, Carmela and Vincenzo have two daughters named Bernarda, possibly in honor of Vincenzo's father.

The first daughter named Bernarda is born and baptized on 20 January 1843. Her godparents are Vincenzo di Bartolo and Anna Maria Lanza, a married couple. Bernarda dies on 1 February, thirteen days old.

The second daughter named Bernarda is born and baptized on 8 March 1845. Her godparents are Liborio Berlingeri and Giuseppa Giandalone, a married couple. She dies at two weeks of age.

Carmela's mother, Rosaria, dies a week later at age 70 (b. 1775) on 14 March.

Bernardo is born and baptized the following year, on 23 April 1846. He is named after his paternal grandfather, as is traditional for the first born son. His godparents are Pasquale Giandalone and Maria la Torre, a married couple.

Rosaria, named after her maternal grandmother, is born and baptized on 10 January 1849. Her godparents are Crisynus Giordano and Angela Gaglianello, a married couple.

Laura is born 22 March 1851 in her parents' house on via S. Pietro, Corleone. When she is born, her mother is age 35 (b. 1816). She is baptized the same day, named after her paternal grandmother. Traditionally, the first born daughter is named after her father's mother. Laura's godparents are Gioachino Castro and Gaetana Cuppuleri, a married couple.

Ciro is named after his maternal grandfather, as is traditional for the second son. He is born and baptized on 16 January 1854. His godparents are Leoluca Schillaci and Anna di Frisco, wife of Gaetano Canali.

Ciro dies the following day.

Maria is born on 6 January 1858, and baptized the next day. Her godparents are Crispino di Frisco and Maria Triolo, a married couple.

Marriages of Carmela's Children

Calogera marries Luciano di Leo on 27 January 1861.

Rosaria marries Giorgio di Palermo, a widower and the son of unknown parents, on 3 March 1878.

Laura marries for the first time to Luciano Quaglino, a widower, on 29 October 1880. They have at least four children together.

Deaths of Vincenzo and Carmela

Vincenzo dies in the hospital at age 69 (b. 1810) on 31 July 1879. Carmela survives him.

Bernardo, who is named after his paternal grandfather, dies at age 41 (b. 1846) on 8 September 1887. He is married to Maria Vutera.

Maria, Carmela's youngest child, marries Leoluca Mannina on 26 August 1892.

Carmela dies in the hospital at age 79, on 9 October 1896.
