Biography

Birth and Early Life in Corleone

Leoluca Cascio (sometimes Castro) is born 18 November 1849 in his parents' home in via Sant'Elena, in Corleone, [1], and baptized the next day[2]. He is the son of Ciro Castro and Lucia Cusimano, named after his paternal grandfather. His godparents are Pietro lo Curto and Liboria Triolo, a married couple.[3]

Leoluca and Vincenza Tufanio publish their intention to wed on 9 October 1881. They post second banns on 16 October.[4]

They marry on 7 November 1881.[5]

Leoluca and Vincenza have at least two children: Lucia (1882), named after Leoluca's mother, and an unnamed male child born in Texas in 1903. According to Find A Grave memorials for Luke, his wife, and their children, Luke has seven children: Lucy (1881), Charlie (1885), Frank (1889), Joe (1890), John C. (1893), Luke Jr. (1897), Lee (1900). The child born in 1903 makes eight.

Lucia is born 1 October 1882 in Corleone and baptized Luciam the next day. Her godparents are Giovanni Ala and Cira, his unmarried sister.[6]

Immigration

Leoluca, Vincenza, and 2-year-old Lucia arrive in New Orleans on the SS Jason in 1884.[7]

Open issue: Memorial pages on Find A Grave indicate a different wife for Luke than Vincenza.[8] No marriage record has been found for Leoluca and Julia Mariana Pomilla (1862-1922), daughter of Francesco Pomilla and Lucy Marino.[9]

Note: Based on available records, Leoluca Cascio is known in the United States as Luke Simon Cash, Sr. His wife may be known as Julia Marianna Pomilla.

Frank is born in June 1889 in Louisiana, according to the record of his death.[10]

Joe is born 16 January 1890 in St. James Parish, Louisiana.[11][12]

John C. is born 10 September 1893 in Bryan, Texas.[13]

Lee is born 10 Sep 1900 in Bryan, Texas.[14][15]

There are tax roll entries for a Luke Kosh beginning in 1895 in Brazos County, TX: 1895[16], 1896[17], 1900[18], and 1901[19]

A male child is born on 14 September 1903 in Stone City, Brazos, TX, the son of Luke Cash and Vincenza (“Vingensa”).[20]

Lee lives in Houston from about 1903, based on the record of his death.[14]

Frank lives in Houston, Texas, by 1914, according to the record of his death. He is a farmer.[10]

In the 1920 federal census of Fort Bend County, Texas, taken 29/30 Jan, Luke Simon Cash, 71 (b. 1848), heads a household on Stafford Houston Rd with his wife, Julia, 58 (b. 1861). They both immigrated from Italy in 1884. Luke is a merchant and general retail merchandiser working on his own account.[21]

Joe is married to Rose Ann Boatcallie.[11] He is self employed in real estate.[12]

John is a fireman.[22] He marries twice, first to Jessie Anna Nevins.[13]

Lee is self-employed in real estate like his brother, Joe.[14] He is married to Bennie Marino.[15]

No record matching Julia's birthdate has been found in the Corleone baptismal indices. Cascio-10 20:58, 13 October 2018 (UTC)

Two death records for Mrs. Julia Cash are probably for Vincenza. In one record, the informant is Lee Cash, who lives in a fire station. (His brother, Joe, is a fireman.) Her parents’ names are not known. Mrs. Julia Cash, white, married, age 54 (b. 1868), dies from a stroke (apoplexy) and aortic aneurysm. on 25 June 1922 on Live Oak St. in Marlin, Falls Co., TX (the main road through a town of about 6k, 172 mi from Houston). She appears to have resided in Houston; the doctor says this is where she contracted her disease. He treated her for 3 days. She is buried in Houston, TX on 27 June.[23]

In the second death record for Julia, on the same day, in the same town, her cause of death is recorded as acute dilation of the heart. She is 52 (b. 1870), a housewife, daughter of Frank Comlio and Lucy Marino. The informant is Luke Cash, husband. (In two different hands, after this are a question mark and an X.) She is buried in Holy Cross in Houston on 27 June.[24]

Death of Leoluca/Luke

Luke Cash, Sr. of 4305 Julian St., Houston, Texas, dies from chronic myocarditis at age 77 on 17 December 1926. His death is also caused by chronic interstitial nephritis. His date of birth and his father's given name are a match for his baptismal record. According to Luke Cash Jr., the informant, Luke Sr.'s mother's name is not known.[25]

He is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Houston, the same day.[25][26]

After Jessie's death, John remarries to Zenia Traina, on 12 January 1958.[13]

Frank dies on 16 Jan 1964 at age 74 in Stafford, Fort Bend, Texas.[10]

Lee dies a widower, from lung cancer, at age 66, on 21 Dec 1966 in Houston.[14][15]

Joe dies on 12 Sep 1969 at age 79 in Houston, TX, from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The informant on his death certificate is likely a son-in-law, Mike Muse. His wife survives him.[12] He is buried in Forest Park Cemetery in Houston.[11]

John dies from heart disease on 7 March 1975 in Houston.[22] He is buried with his second wife, Zenia, in Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston.[13]
