Biography

Rosaria Cascio is born 27 April 1865 in her parents' home in alla Candelora, Corleone. Her father, Nicolo' Cascio, age 30, villico (farmer), reports her birth. Her mother is Liboria Listi, age 26.

Rosaria is baptized the following day at Chiesa Madre. Her godparents are Domenico Lanza and Vincenza, his unmarried sister.

Rosaria is identified as a contadina (peasant) on her marriage record.

At age 21, on 24 April 1887, she marries Francesco Paolo Governali, also a contadino. The Church record of their marriage calls her "Rosalia."

Francesco Paolo and Rosaria have at least six children: Rosalia (1888), Biagia (1890), Giuseppe (1892), Nicolo (1894) Maria Anna (1897), and Liboria (1900).

The names of the known children are interesting in that they do not closely follow the Sicilian naming tradition. Francesco Paolo's parents, Giuseppe and Rosalia, have namesakes. The second son is named for Rosaria's father, Nicolo'. But the second daughter is not named Liboria: instead, the third daughter is named for her maternal grandmother. See the Cascio Family Space for a short discussion on naming conventions.

On 3 May 1894, when their son Nicolo' is born, the family lives on via Sferlazzo in Corleone.

Nicolo' dies on 30 November 1894 at seven months of age.

At age 40, Rosaria and four of her children, Biagia, Giuseppe, Maria, and Liboria, can be found making the two-week voyage from Sicily to New York twice in 1905: on the S.S. Liguria arriving 29 September 1905, and again on The Italia, 13 November 1905.

Open question: Why would anyone make this voyage multiple times? And yet I find many instances where evidently Corleonesi have done exactly this. Are they scouting missions, indicative of a "look and see" attitude, or the absence of intent to make a new home, far away?

On the first voyage, the Governalis travel with the related Merendino and Mancuso families to New York. Rosaria and her children have had their passage paid by her husband, and they are traveling to meet him: the manifest gives their destination as Francesco Paolo Governali, 240 West 104 St, New York. The Merendino families are meeting Salvatore Merendino, at 686 105th St, New York.

On the second voyage, on the S.S. Italia, they travel with the extensive La Gumina family from Corleone, who are going to an uncle Giuseppe Armato at 235 East 97th St, New York. Once again, Francesco Paolo has paid for all five of his family members' tickets, and they are joining him in New York.

In 1906, Rosalia, whose immigration record has not been found, marries in New York, to Biagio Milone.
