Biography

Philip Ross, born ca 1772 in Hampshire County, Virginia. He was the son of Stephen and Elizabeth (Crose) Ross.

In the last will and testament of Peter Casey he leaves "..unto my son in law Philip Ross the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds".[1] This record establishes the relationship to Elizabeth Casey to Peter Casey. (I'm still not convinced she was born in 1745, nor am I convinced that Magdalena Magdalena (de Pue) is her mother. If Elizabeth Casey was born in 1745 she would have been having children up to the age of 58.

On 11 Mar 1813 in his last Will and testament, Philip Ross left Elizabeth, his wife and his son Steven Ross as his executors.

In the name of God I Philip Ross being Weake in Body But of Sound and perfect minde and memory considering the uncertainty of this mortal Life and Being of Sound minde Blessed Be almighty God for the Saim I do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say first I give and Bequeath unto my beloved wife Elisabeth Ross and Steven Ross all my Real and personall Estate it is my desire that my Children Shall be Raised and should be Educated out of the Estate and my wife Elisabeth Ross and Steven Ross is to keepe my Estate untell the youngest Childe comes of age if She keepes singel if my wife should be marred again then my Estate is to Be Equally Divided among my Children and the hole Estate must be Valued and it is my desires that as fast as the Children coms of age theay shall have thear portion valued unto them I give and Bequeath the saim to my Loyal Beloved Wife Elisabeth Ross and Steven Ross whome hereby appoint sole executrix of this my last Will and testement heareby eing all former Wills By me Witness wheareof I have here unto set my hand and Seal Philip Ross this 11th day of March 1813[2]

Know all men by these presents, That we Elizabeth Ross and Steven Ross and Tachariah Linton and Abraham Doll all of Ross County and state of Ohio, are held and firmly bound unto John McLandburgtreasurer of the county aforesaid, or his successors in office, in the sum of Eleven Hundred dollars, to be paid unto the said treasurer or his successors in office, for which payment well and truly to be made and done, we bind ourselves, our heirs and administrators firmly by these presents. Given under our hands and seals this sixteenth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirteen. Whereas the court of comon pleas for Ross County aforesaid, have this day appointed the above bound Elizabeth Ross and Steven Ross Executrix and Executor of Philip Ross late of said county deceased. Now, the condition of the above obligation is such, that if the above bounded Elizabeth Ross and Philip Ross will faithfully perform all the duties required of him by law, then this obligation to be void, other wise to be and remain in full force and effect in law.

The Inventory and personal property of Philip Ross was appraised for $346.06 1/2 and returned on 2 Sep 1820. With other credits, the amount to be devided to the heirs was 377.68 1/2.

Elizabeth Ross made the following purchases. Elizabeth Ross 1 Auger .84 Elizabeth Ross 1 Grindstone 2.54

The inventory, appraisement and sale of Philip's Estate was dated 2 Sep 1820. This disproves that Elizabeth died in 1813.

The first child to take their claim of the Estate was John Ross. On 8 Feb 1817. Why did John hire Daniel Doll as his attorney when he was already guaranteed a stake in the claim?[3] On the 18 Feb 1817 he was awareded the claim.[4]

Stephen Ross took his claim on 9 Oct 1824.[5]

Philip Ross Jr took his claim on 7 Sep 1828 and sold it to his brother Adam Ross.[6]

The rest of the children take their 1/10 portion of the land and sold it to Adam Ross for $100 on 20 Feb 1830[7], is this when Elizabeth died? Or did all of the children become of age?

Did Elizabeth Casey die or remarry? In Philip Ross's WILL and last testament he states that Elizabeth his wife is to keep the estate untill the youngest child becomes of age. If she should marry again the estate is to be equally divided between his children. Also as the children becomeof age they shall have their portion valued unto them. John Ross claimed his portion on February 8, 1817. Stephen Ross claimed his portion on October 9, 1824 and sold it to his brother Adam Ross. Phillip Ross claimed his portion on September 27, 1828 and sold it to his brother Adam Ross. This accounts for three portions of the estate and three sons of Philip and Elizabeth Ross. Then on February 20th, 1830 Adam Ross, Elizabeth (floss) Welsh, Solomon Ross, Sarah (Ross) Jones, Catharine (Ross) Hanks, and Daniel Doll sold their eight ninths share to John Vangundy. There is only six names listed in the February 20th, 1830 sale but Adam Ross had previously bought out his brothers Stephen and Phillip share which means he had three shares. Nowwith John Ross's share and these eight shares accounts for the nine children of Philip and Elizabeth Ross. Did Elizabeth Ross die in 1830 that the six children all claimed their share at one time?[8]

We have Daniel and Pricilla Doll claiming a share with the other heirs of Philip Ross on February 20th, 1830. Daniel Doll married Barbara Ross on December 9, 1813 in Ross County, Ohio. Barbara Ross Doll passed away and Daniel Doll married Priscilla Purdum, daughter of Walter and Priscilla (Browning) Purdum on December 11, 1827.

Research Notes

Pease do not use this document as a source for this family. I believe this is the information that people are conflating these profiles with. There must be 2 seperate families that consist of a Philip Ross marrying an Elizabeth Casey, daughter of a Peter Casey and Madaline ___. The information contained in this document does not match any of the records of this family. This family was never in Pennsylvania.
