Biography

Honora was born on 24 April 1863 in County Kerry, Ireland. She was baptised at the Church of St. Stephen and John, Knockrour, Castleisland, Co. Kerry. She was the daughter of Jeremiah Casey and Catherine Wren.

At the age of 13 years, Honora sailed from Glasgow to New Zealand on the ship "Dunedin" with her sister, Catherine, who was aged 23 years. Their brother Daniel along with their parents Jeremiah and Catherine were sailing to America but Catherine (younger) was determined to go to New Zealand. Why Honora sailed with her at a young age is not certain but perhaps their parents entrusted Catherine with the guardianship of Honora. It may also be an indication as to how close the sisters were. They arrived in Otago on 9 November 1876.

On 28 January 1863, in her 23rd year, Honora married James Fahey, a labourer from Tokomairiro (Milton). They were married in the Roman Catholic Church in Milton. James was noted to have been born in New Zealand and his parents were named as Thomas Fahey (Farmer) and Sabina Boyle. Honora's parents were noted as Jeremiah Casey (Farmer) and Catherine Wren and her birthplace noted as Ireland. NB: Spelling mistake on marriage certificate of Honora's name - spelt Hanora.

James had a farm within easy distance of Milton. He and Honora had a family of 5 children: Thomas, James, Dinah, Sidney John and Jack (born after his father's death).

Honora and James were a very happy couple and Honora was once heard to say she was so contented that she sometimes was afraid something might happen to spoil her life. Sadly, her fears were realised one evening when James rode into Milton and was thrown from his horse. Honora was pregnant with their sixth (and youngest) child, Jack.

Honora was 62 years of age when she died on 15 June 1927 at Stafford Hospital in Dunedin. Cause of death was Carcinoma of the liver (1 year), Toxaemia and Heart Failure. She was buried in Anderson's Bay Cemetery in Dunedin.
