Biography

Mary (Casey) Knowles was born in Lancashire, England.

Mary Jane Casey (1854-1898) was born in the West Derby registration district of Liverpool (likely Toxteth Park) in 1854. She was the eldest daughter of Thomas Casey and his wife Mary Pickston. ^[1]

Her father was an iron moulder and the family lived in Toxteth Park for a few years until 1858 after which they moved to St Helens. 2 of her sisters were born there and they were shown in the 1861 census there on Hill Street. ^[2]

They moved back to Liverpool within a few years and by the late 1860s were shown on Combermere Street, Toxteth Park (electoral registers). In the 1871 census, Mary was the eldest of 7 children listed and she was employed as a general servant. ^[3]

She was still living at home on Combermere Street when she married Henry Knowles on the 26th August 1875 at St Michael's church, Toxteth Park. ^{[4] [5]}

He was a mariner at that time and was still when their first son, Thomas James, was christened in 1878 and they still lived on Combermere Street. ^[6] Shortly thereafter he took a job on land and was recorded as a railway porter in 1880 when their second child, Samuel Henry, was born whilst they lived on Laxey Street, Toxteth Park. ^[7] Samuel only lived 2 months and they subsequently moved north across the city to Kirkdale. In the 1881 census they lived on Brisbane Street ^[8]

They remained on Brisbane Street for at least another 6 years adding Elizabeth Jane (1882), Henrietta (1884-1885) who died aged 6 months, and Cecilia Alice (1887) but had moved to Carmel Street, Kirkdale before the 1891 census by which time Eva Ann (1890) had arrived. ^[9] They stayed there another few months before moving on to Cockerell Street, Kirkdale before 1892 (electoral registers). There was one further addition to the family in 1896 when William Henry (1896-1897) was born but he too died in infancy. ^[10]

Mary Jane died at the address in September 1898 ^[11] and was buried in Kirkdale Cemetery on the 23rd September 1898. ^[12]
