Hi Cheryl,

It looks like you may have some outstanding merges that need attention. You can find them by following the link at the top of this page under >My Wikitree>Watchlist, then hit the button that says Pending Merges. If you need help, just ask.

Thanks for helping with Wikitree

Hi Cheryl,

I'm looking forward to working with you on those profiles!

Hi Cheryl,

Thanks for completing two of the merges I recently proposed! There are still about 40 more merges I’ve proposed for duplicate profiles you’ve created. I checked, and see that you just created another duplicate profile today, for Sarah Tipton who married Luke John Edington. He already had a wife named Sarah Tipton. Why did you create another profile for her? It’s really important on WikiTree that there’s only one profile for each person. Would you please complete all of the merges I’ve proposed, and try more carefully in the future, before you create a new profile, to be sure there isn’t already a profile on WikiTree for that person.

I only looked at about a thousand of your more than four thousand profiles. I recommend that you look to see if there are other duplicate profiles that I’ve missed. I believe there are likely to be more. Look at your Watchlist, sort it by birth date, with the oldest date at the top, then look down through the list to see where there is more than one person with the same name and birth/death information. If you’re the profile manager for each of the duplicates you will be able to complete the merge yourself at that time. (When there is a different profile manager for the other profile, you should still propose the merge, but you will have to wait for the other profile manager to also agree before the merge can be completed.) Let me know if you don’t understand how to do that, or if I can help.

While you’re looking at your Watchlist, when you see that a Last Name at Birth (and the person’s Wiki ID) begins with a lowercase letter, instead of a capital letter, would you please change those you find to be spelled with an initial capital letter. (It looks to me like you didn’t understand that at first, but it’s something you’re now doing correctly.) It isn’t sufficient to change the Current Last Name to being capitalized. On the person’s ‘edit’ page you need to click on the ‘link’ for ‘edit’, (in brackets) just to the right of the “Last Name at Birth”. Then, in the box for “Correct Last Name at Birth” spell out the full name with the first letter of the name capitalized. Let me know if you don’t understand. (I would fix these for you, but only the profile manager can change the spelling of the Last Name at Birth.)

One more thing, before you create any more WikiTree profiles, would you please go back and find actual sources for the profiles you already have. These are not sufficient sources on WikiTree: “Family search/Family tree”, “Ancestry.com”. Take a look at the sources I added yesterday to the profile of David Oscar Stone (1889-1962) to see what I was able to find quickly on Ancestry. Again, please let me know if there’s any of this that you don’t understand. I’d be glad to help.

Hi, Cheryl!

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Hi! I posted a comment to Eaker-23 about Kathie's recommended changes, asking her to "ensure the text cites sources." Could you add text to Peter Hildebrand's profile to explain why the profile for Eaker-23 is not his mother? Or will Kathie's proposed change & the merges with Eaker-69 and Eaker-223 & Hildebrand-72 with Hildebrand-345 resolve the issue? If not, could you work with Kathie on this family? WikiTree is a single, global tree, so each person only gets one profile (which is why Kathie proposed merges for the three Eaker profiles and two Peter profiles).

Thanks!

Thank you for adding your DNA Test information to your profile on WikiTree. Your information will be propagated to the profiles of your parents and your ancestors within about 24 hours of being added. It will also propagate to the profiles of the descendants of your ancestors, so they may see your information under the heading "DNA Connections" just as you can see theirs.

Getting started with DNA outlines how to proceed to use your DNA test information on WikiTree and DNA is a link to a collection of links about WikiTree's many features involving DNA.

The DNA Connections list on your profile will provide a visual way for you to find potential relatives on WikiTree who have also added their DNA test information. Using DNA tools at sites like GEDMatch.com, if you find a relative that matches your DNA sufficiently and you have genealogical sources for the intermediate relationships, you can mark the specific parental relationships back to the most recent ancestor that you both share as "confirmed with DNA." For details, guidance, and examples of how to properly document DNA confirmations, see DNA confirmation.

To get the best results, begin adding sourced profiles for your ancestors until you can connect to ancestors already in WikiTree. If you have exhausted what you know on one line, it can sometimes help to add what you know on another line. The more branches you are able to add the greater the likelihood of finding potential cousins to match with. The process of identifying which branch elements of DNA relate to will better enable you to find matches that relate to the particular branches you are researching.

Let me know if you have any questions and have fun!

hi, Cheryl...

We're very pleased you decided to join our community and hope you'll have great success in finding cousins with whom to collaborate. In the upper right hand corner, you'll find several drop-down-boxes that will prove very useful to you. You might review the help page before you begin this new adventure. The help pages are filled with answers to many questions you may have. For the health of our shared tree, please add documentation and sources to each profile you create. In order to make it easier to search for duplicates, it's important to add a birth or death date and place to each profile. Please estimate a date if you don't know the exact date. We hope you're experience as a WikiTreer will be very productive.
