James Cason was born 23 Jul, 1758 in Virginia, as is recorded in the Cason Family Bible.
James served in the Revolutionary War, along with his brothers William and Edward Cason. "He was but a strippling [sic] of nineteen years when 'the embattled farmers stood, and fired the shot heard round the world.'"
War records indicate that James served as a private in the company of Captain John Quarles, later designated as Captain William Long's company, Second Virginia State Regiment, commanded by Colonels Gregory Smith and William Blount.[1]
In 1784 James married Rebecca Smith who bore him eight children. James gathered his family 25 years later and crossed the mountains from Virginia to Tennessee. He settled in Jackson County in 1810 and built a log house. He became founder of the Cason family in that county.
James Cason died in 1840 at the age of 82. He was buried in a family cemetery near the spot where he made his home for many years. A marker was placed on his grave by the Ft Blount Chapter, D.A.R. in 1940, one hundred years after his death.
According to James' Affidavit for pension, he was born in Caroline County, Virginia in 1762 and removed to Jackson County, TN where he has resided ever since. He says his brother Edward Cason has proof of his birth. James P. Harris, presiding justice of Jackson County Court certified that James Cason married Rebecca Smith on Feb. 17, 1785 (differs from date posted), and that he died on the 12th of July 1842 and his wife Rebecca Cason predeceased him, and at the time of his death he had three surviving children, to wit: Edward M. Cason, Susannah Cason and Elizabeth S. Cox.
According to some sources, Jason was born in Wales, his father was named Bartlett Cason, and said father had emigrated from Ireland.
James' D.A.R. tombstone shows the year of death to be 1840. This agrees with the date found in the source book by Mrs Spivey (see below).
