Merci beaucoup! Thank you so much for adopting my secret Santa request. You have no idea how much you made my Christmas. I became interested in genealogy in the 1970s after we were at Jean Baptiste Aiguier's grave in Greenwood Cemetery. I was amazed at how many Aiguiers were buried there. I looked on micro fiche for the obituaries for those buried there. I found the death notice for Jean Baptiste Aiguier and wrote down what I found, but then my notes were put aside.
My grandparents Francis Aiguier and Anna Brennan broke up when my mother was 16 years old. While I knew my grandmother, I never met my grandfather. Going back another generation, Francis' father died when he was young and their mother raised them. Go back another generation and John Matthew Aiguier died young also. So my knowledge of the Aiguiers was very little. There is a family legend that Jean Baptiste Aiguier fled France because he was connected with Napoleon and was a wanted man when Napoleon was defeated. That story comes down through family lines that didn't know one another.
Recently I found my notes from the 1970s and realized that the death notice gave me exactly how long Jean Baptiste had lived so that gave me his birthdate. Then a friend of mine who speaks French found the record of J. B.'s birth and baptism which gave me where he was born and the names of his parents. But I didn't know how to attach that information to WikiTree.
Now you have given me the names of Jean Baptiste's grandparents!!!!
By the way, the other family legend that didn't really make sense was that Jean Baptiste was somehow also involved with Lafayette and the American Revolution. That made no sense looking at J. B.'s dates. It turns out that it was J. B.'s wife's grandfather who came to the colonies with Lafayette.
I've been to France, but never to Toulon. I hope I can visit next year.
Thanks so much!!!
I am happy that you like what I did. However, I have not yet completed your wish: I still have to trace Jean Baptiste's siblings, and find a relationship with the namesake who was guillotined. The first task is not too difficult. The second one is more, because there are several people with the same name. Actually, two of them where arrested at the same time: one who was about 10 years older (so he cannot be Jean Baptiste's father) and who was guillotined, and one who was 10 years younger and who was finally released. At the moment I do not know the name of their parents. They are all from the same place (Solliès), so they must be related.
Let we know when you visit Toulon. I do not live very far.
One reason for my question about siblings of Jean Baptiste Aiguier (22 Feb 1770) is that years ago I was sent by a Richard Aiguier a rather disjointed genealogy starting with a "Ulysses Aiguier born in France about 1800." The only connection I can make between Ulysses and my family is that he named his first son "John G. Aiguier" and the G could have been the initial for Gabriel, but that's not much of a connection.
Included in the package was a copy of "Les Anciennes Familles De Provence: Genealogie De La Maison D'Aiguieres: Seigneurs de Mejanes par le Baron Du Roure from 1907. I don't trust that there's any connection between the 11th century Aiguieres and my ancestors. However, they were in Arles which isn't that far from Toulon.
Thanks for any more that you can find, Joan
I just like to thank you sooooooo much you joined our challenge! You are a gem!
Do not blame me for language or spelling mistakes as this is what Google Translate tells me :D :
Je tiens juste à vous remercier tellement que vous avez rejoint notre défi! Vous êtes un joyau! (I probably speak French as much as you speak Dutch besides I learned at least: "Voicy, le cley" at school! :D
I just like you had the guts to jump in. I will remember you for ever because of that! Thank you so much.
Sweet regards from The Netherlands, A.
I just wanted to let you know that I was able to connect us as 10th cousins, as we're both descendants of Elie Lehoux and Anne Dorion. You should also see closer connections to the global tree, especially through the Riverin family, once the system updates.
We are delighted that you wish to continue contributing to the France Project, and thank you for submitting your member interest form.
