Sam was the son of William and Evanna (Derry) Cassel. He married Ellen Walton in September 1943. She preceded him in death April 21, 1982.
He is survived by one son, Sam E. Cassel; one daughter, Evana M. Cassel; one grandson, Thomas (Jody) Cassel; two great-granddaughters, Samantha Kay and Jordan Ellen Cassel; two step grandsons, Anthony Depoy and Paul Depoy; one step great-granddaughter, Madyson Chevelle Depoy; numerous nieces and nephews; and one sister, Matilda Walton.
In addition to his wife and his parents, he was also preceded in death by five brothers, Ray, Floyd, Jay, Ernest and Jessie, and two sisters, Lena Faulkner and an infant sister.
He farmed before serving his country in World War II as a medical technician in the U.S. Army-Air Force in Europe. He received a medal for participation in North France, Rhineland and central Europe. He returned home to farm and joined Labor Union 991, where he was the secretaryfor many years and was rewarded with a lifetime membership.
He worked contruction in the Macomb area, including many WIU buildings, schools and McDonough District Hospital as well as roadwork and housing developments. After retiring, he continued to farm for several years. He lived in Macomb for 11 years and moved to Colchester to farm in 1959. He was a member of the Macomb VFW.
Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Augusta.
