Jean-Baptiste was born about 1744 in Guyenne, France (probably close to Rauzan, France) to Philippe Castaing/Castanay (1720's) and Francoise Olivier (of Eauze and Guienne, France) [1].

Although it is unknown exactly when Jean Baptiste lands on Canadian soil, it is evident that he is in Baie-Saint-Paul by 12 Jun1775. This represents his first business transaction (an exchange with Joseph-Marie Bouchard) as noted by the notaire Neron.

On the 14th of Oct 1776, Jean marries Genevieve Cote in the town of Baie-Saint-Paul. Together they had at least 3 children: Philippe Castagne, (1778–1853), Félicité Castagne (1780–1826), and Alexis Castagne (1782–1861)

Jean passed away on 09Oct1812, in Baie-Saint-Paul at the apparent age of 68.

Research Notes / Notes de recherche

1. Name Change: Jean-Baptiste entered Canada bearing the name "Castaing". It's entirely plausible that Tanguay's entry of "Carling" stems from the entry for the marriage at Baie-St-Paul. The record itself is written in a way that could be construed as "Carling". The surname for the family eventually evolves into the "Castagne" nomenclature during subsequent generations.

2. Brick Wall: Jean-Baptiste's parents "Philippe Castaing" and "Francoise Olivier" still represent the Brick-wall in the line. If you have any information on these 2 individuals please contact me Refer to the entries for Philippe and Francoise for more information. (M. Castagne, Mar 2018)
