Biography

This profile is part of the Casteel Name Study.

JOHN CASTEEL (Joseph1) was probably born at Greenbrier County, Virginia, about 1770. He married AGNES NANCY HOLLEY on 27 June 1797 at Greenbrier, Virginia.[1] Agnes Nancy was born about 1773 to 1780, possibly the sister of John’s sister Ann’s husband, William Holley.

At the 1820 census for Union, Logan County, Ohio, we find John Casteel, head of household with three males under the age of 10 (John, Lewis & ?); one male age 10 to 15 (Isom); one male 16 to 18 (Elijah); one male 16 to 25 (William Henry); one male 45 and over (John); one female 10 to 15 (Mary); one female 45 and over (Agnes Nancy).[2]

The 1830 census for Center, Delaware County, Indiana lists one male under 5 years (Unknown); one male 10 to 14 (Unknown Son); two males 15 to 19 years (Lewis); two males 20 to 29 (John & Isom); one male 60 to 69 (John); one female under 5 (Unknown); one female 15 to 19 years (Unknown); one female 20 to 29 years (Mary) and one female (Agnes Nancy) age 50 to 59, if this is the family of John Casteel.[3]

At the 1840 census for Madison, Livingston, Missouri, we find only John, age 70 to 79; and Agnes Nancy, age 60 to 69.[4]

It is believed that John died at Dodge, Putnam, Missouri about 1845.

At the 1850 census for District 29, Dodge, Missouri, Agnes Nancy is 77 years old and living with her son William who is 54; his wife Mary and three children. William is a farmer.[5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
