Biography

Benjamin was born about 1760 in Frederick County, Virginia (now Hampshire County, West Virginia). He is the son of Jacob Casselman and Rhoda Robertson. He passed away after September 1824 and before August 1825 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee.

Benjamin moved with his father, Jacob Casselman, and others of the family to Davidson County, North Carolina (later Tennessee) about 1782.

In 1787 Jacob, [sons] Benjamin, Andrew and [nephew] John Casselman were on the first Tax list of the Cumberland Settlements, Davidson County, NC [TN] of white males over 21. Each as 1 taxable male. [ref. 42a] Benjamin is referred to:

He was in the company including Capt. Rains, pursuing Indians to the Muscle Shoals, who had attacked the settlements in 1787: [ref 42b][1]

Benjamin married Amelia Unknown about 1790 in Davidson County, Tennessee. Known children include:

On 27 November 1792, Warrant #346 was issued to brothers Benjamin, Jacob and Joseph Castleman, "heirs of Jacob Castleman," in North Carolina for 523 acres of land "lying and being in our County of Davidson on the waters of Cumberland and Stones Creek a branch of Stones River." Payment made of "ten pounds for every hundred acres." Surveyed for the Castlemans on 12 Mar 1791 and originally entered by Warrant #207 for Alex Martin on 29 Jan 1784. [2]

Benjamins's father, Jacob Casselman, died in August 1803 and his will was recorded in December 1803. Benjamin and his brother Andrew were named as Executors, but Benjamin declined to serve so Andrew was appointed.

In 1820 Benjamin is on the census in Davidson County, Tennessee. In his household are:

  • Males 45+ - 1 [Benjamin]
  • Females under age 10 - 1 [Susan]

  • Females age 26-44 - 1 [Amelia]

On 30 March 1825 Warrant #1144 issued to Benjamin Castleman for 19 acres in Davidson County, Tennessee. Survey date 15 July 1824.[3]

Death & Legacy

Will written 27 September 1824 by Benjamin Castleman in Davidson County, Tennessee. Entered for probate on 27 August 1825; inventory recorded January Term 1826.

"In the name of God Amen.

"I Benjamin Castleman of the county of Davidson and the state of Tennessee do this 27th day of Sept 1824 make this my last will and testament viz; after paying all my just debts, due and demands, I give to my wife Amelia Castleman the home place where I now live during her widowhood or lifetime if she lives a widow with the stock, tools and household furniture, then to decend [sic] to my three sons Araham [sic], Benjamin and James Castleman. I also will to my son Abraham Castleman my smith tools, I also will to my other two sons Lewis and David Castleman a bond I have on [nephews] Benjamin Castleman and Jacob Castleman of Wilson County for 200 and 76 acres of land lying in Wilson County; Also John Bon [sic s/b Bond] is to have 20 acres of land where he now lives and is marked out for him provided he pays 200 dollars, 50 dollars to be paid yearly. This money is to go to the use of my family to support and school them, if the said Bon [sic] does not pay the land is to be sold and go to the use of my family; The reason why I do not mention any thing to be given to my daughters I have portioned them off viz; Sally Bon, Rhod Bon and Betsy Castleman. Betsy Castleman is to have a saddle; Susan Castleman is to have a horse, saddle and bridle when she comes of age.

Inventory taken 6 March 1826 by Andrew Casselman, Executor. Several items listed including 110 acres of land on Richland Creek, also a bond on Jacob Casselman and Benjamin Casselman of Wilson County, Tennessee for 167 acres of land in Wilson County. Jan Term 1826. [5]
