Biography

Calogero Castro is born and baptized 13 November 1853, the son of Antonino Castro (sometimes recorded as Cascio) and Rosalia Marino. His godparents are Giuseppe Triolo and Rosa Patella.[1][2]

Calogero marries Rosalia Lombardo of San Cipirrello Lato, which is in Palermo province, on 10 September 1880.[3] It is the first marriage for either of them. They are both of the age of majority; no birth records are included in their marriage allegati. A letter dated the day previous, from the archbishop in Corleone, attests to Calogero's free status to marry.[4]

This record gives Calogero's parents as Antonino, a pizzicagnolo (deli owner) who lives in Corleone, and his wife, the late Rosalia Marino, indicating that Calogero's mother dies before this time.

Calogero and Rosalia have at least four children: Marietta, Rosalia (b. 1876), Antonino (1886), and Luisa (1891).[2]

Marietta is mentioned as a child of Calogero and Rosalia,[2] but no other information is available at this time about her.

Antonino, called "Nene", is born 19 November 1886 in San Cipirello.[2]

Rosalia immigrates to New York with her grandfather, Antonino, age 63 (b. 1834), and hise second wife Luigia Marino, 49 (b. 1848), who is also Rosalia's aunt. (Antonino married two sisters in succession.) Also with them are four of Antonino and Luigia's children, Pietro, age 14 (b. 1883); Salvatore, age 10 (b. 1887 (actually, he is 12); Giovanna, age 17 (b. 1880); and, [[Castro-309|Francesca Paola], age 19 (b. 1878).[2]

Luisa marries Angelo di Carlo, her first cousin, around 1916 in Sicily. They both immigrate to New York, he in 1926 and Luisa two years later. They both die in Italy.[2]

Rosalia marries Giuseppe Leone.[2]

Nene immigrates at an unknown date. He marries in Manhattan, to Luigia "Luisa" di Carlo, on 18 October 1913. After World War II, they return to Sicily, where Nene becomes a wealthy investor.[2]
