Biography

Vita Cascio is born and baptized 16 November 1846 in Corleone. She is the daughter of Giuseppe Cascio and, reportedly, Giuseppa Sindaco, although I believe this is an error, as I have found no other records for this couple. The error can be explained: Giuseppa's mother's name is Sindaco.

Giuseppe Cascio and Giuseppa Profita are known to have a daughter, Vita, from the record of her marriage to Ottavio Governali. She is named after her paternal grandmother, Vita Salemi, as is traditional for the first born daughter. Vita's godparents are Giovanni lo Bello and Biagia Cascio, a married couple.

In the baptismal record just below Vita's, on the same day, Giuseppe and Biagia Cascio, brother and sister, stand as godparents to Filomena di Leo. However, based on other records, Giuseppe's sister, Biagia, is married to Giovanni Cutrone. The parents of Vita's godmother are not yet known.

Vita and her father stand as godparents to Antonino Pisciotta, son of Bernardo Pisciotta and Rosalia Liggio, on 31 August 1860.

Vita marries Ottavio Governali on 24 April 1864. Her parents are still living at this time; Vita has siblings born after her marriage.

Vita and Ottavio have at least seven children together: Girolamo (1867), Francesco Paolo (1870), Giuseppe (1873), Leoluca (1877), Arcangelo (1881), Michele (1884), and Rosalia (1888).

Girolamo is born and baptized on 31 July 1867 as Hieronymum. His godmother is the unmarried Maria Pomilla.

Francesco Paolo is born and baptized 11 December 1870. His godparents are Antoninus and Catharina Saporito, who are not married to each other.

Giuseppe is born and baptized Josephum on 28 December 1873. His godparents are Blasius Mondello and Maria Antonia Cimino, a married couple.

Leoluca is born 25 August 1877 and baptized Leonemlucam the next day. His godparents are Philippus Caruso and Maria Rosa di Gregorio, a married couple.

Arcangelo is born and baptized Archangelum on 21 September 1881. His godparents are Petrus Castro and Dominica Mangano. Arcangelo dies at a year and nine months of age on 18 June 1883.

Michele is born 2 July 1884 in Corleone and baptized the next day. His godparents are Giovanni Binenti and Carmela Ribaudo, a married couple.[1]

Rosalia is baptized as Rosolia Grimaldi, daughter of Octaviano Grimaldi and Vita Castro. Rosalia is born 20 August 1888 and baptized Rosolia the next day. Her godmother is Carmela Mangano, who is unmarried.

Based on other similar names in records of this time, I believe her father's name has been mangled in this baptismal record, and is actually Ottavio (Octavio in Latin) Governali. Ottavio's name is also recorded this way in the 1894 marriage of their son, Girolamo, to Antonina Caruso. In this baptismal record, Grimaldi has been inserted after the fact.

On the Trimveria, arriving in New Orleans in 1893, these passengers are destined for New Orleans. Their last place of residence, contact people, are not recorded.

148. Michele Governali, 8 (b. 1884)

149. Rosalia Governali, 4 (b. 20 Aug 1888)[2]

On 22 April 1894, Girolamo marries Antonina Caruso. Girolamo is age 26 (b. 1868), a contadino (peasant). His parents are both living in Corleone at this time. His bride, Antonina Caruso, is age 15 (b. 1879), also contadina, also of Corleone. She is the daughter of Filippo Caruso (who is living in New Orleans at this time) and Maria Rosa Di Gregorio, who is living in Corleone.

According to a note under his baptismal record, Leoluca marries in Los Angeles, California, America, with Herlinda Ceseno, daughter of Petro, in the Chiesa Immacolata, on 14 February 1909.
