The Cate family members from Surry, Bertie, and Wilkes counties (some of which were subsumed by the others) did not seem to descend from the sons of Robert Ezra Cate (who instead went to Orange County). Instead they seem to have come from those who left Edenton, NC after 1715. Those then moved to TN in 1780's and '90's,
