Cumberland was an original Township in the Chignecto region and included the area between Sackville and Amherst. It includes present day Westmorland Parish and Fort Lawrence.
The thirteen original townships projected by Governor Lawrence in 1759 were Horton, Cornwallis, Falmouth, Onslow, Granville, Annapolis, Cumberland, Amherst, Sackville, Tinmouth, Liverpool, Barrington and Yarmouth.
