The Durham Regiment originated in Port Hope, Ontario on 16 November 1866, when the '46th "East Durham" Battalion of Infantry' was authorized to be formed. It was redesignated: '46th "Durham" Battalion of Infantry' on 1 August 1897; '46th Durham Regiment' on 8 May 1900; and 'The Durham Regiment' on 12 March 1920. On 15 December 1936, it was amalgamated with 'The Northumberland Regiment'.
