Category: 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment of Foot

The 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment of Foot was a British Army infantry regiment founded in 1755 as the 55th by Colonel William Whitmore of Apley. The Regiment was renumbered in 1757 to the 53rd following establishment reduction.

In 1881, as part of the Childers Reforms, it became The King's Shropshire Light Infantry Regiment. Its traditions are currently held by The Rifles.
