- Antarctica is the southernmost continent, lying wholly within the Antarctic Circle. It contains the geographic South Pole. The land mass has no permanent residents, and therefore, no government. The Antarctic Treaty, signed by 49 countries to date, prohibits military activities, mineral mining, nuclear explosions and nuclear waste disposal; supports scientific research; and, protects the continent's ecozone. Ongoing experiments are conducted by more than 4,000 scientists from many nations.
