Although not an archdiocese until 1472, St Andrews was recognized as the chief see of the Scottish Catholic church from at least the 11th century. It remained an archdiocese until the Catholic Church abandoned the ancient dioceses and hierarchy following the Scottish Reformation. When it was eventually restored on 15 March 1878, it was renamed the Archdiocese of St. Andrews and Edinburgh.
