The Asaf Jahi dynasty gained control of a large territory in South India when the Mughal Empire declined in the early 18th century. The heads of the family ruled as Nizams of Hyderabad. When the British withdrew from India, the last Nizam attempted to become independent, but was crushed by the forces of independent India in September 1948. The former territory of Hyderabad now belongs to the states of Telangana, Maharastra and Karnataka.
