Terra Australis, as the Australian Continent was known by Western Civilisations, was inhabited by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders for more than 60,000 years. From 1788, Australia's British colonies were governed by British governors. Gradually, the colonies adopted self-government as independant colonies, before federating in 1901 to become the Commonwealth of Australia.
