Rugby League football in Australia has been one of the country's most popular sports since it started being played there in 1908 and is the dominant winter football code in the states of New South Wales and Queensland. The break away from the Rugby Union was over player payments, insurance and such; in other words, professionalism. The country has been dominant over the other rugby league-playing nations for many years, but enjoys a strong rivalry with New Zealand. The national team is known as the 'Kangaroos' and wear green and gold. Following the inauguration of an eight-club competition in Sydney in 1908, competitions appeared in Brisbane (1909), Newcastle (1910), Illawarra (1911) and then quickly spread thoughout regional centres of both NSW and Queensland. The elite competition is the National Rugby League (NRL), which features ten teams from New South Wales, three teams from Queensland, and one team each from Victoria, Australian Capital Territory and New Zealand. It grew out of the NSWRFL (the Sydney competition). State of Origin is the annual interstate competition between New South Wales (Blues) and Queensland (Maroons), in which players must be selected by criteria based upon where their senior football career originated (not their place of birth). The remaining States compete in an annual Affiliated States Championship competition. There are club competitons throughout each Australian State and the Northern Territory. The Australian Capital territory is part of the New South Wales Country Rugby League (NSWCFL). There are separate divisions for women and juniors. Rugby League is commonly known either as 'league' or 'football'.
