Category: Baldwin County, Alabama
|
Baldwin County was established on December 21, 1809, ten years before Alabama became a state. It is named in honor of Senator Abraham Baldwin, though he never lived in what is now Alabama. The county seat is Bay Minette. The largest county in Alabama by area, it includes a portion of Mobile Bay. The U.S. federal government designates Baldwin County as the Daphne-Fairhope-Foley metropolitan statistical area.
- NOTE: Baldwin County, Mississippi Territory, was created on December 21, 1809, from the southern part of Washington County, Mississippi Territory. It was bordered by Washington County and Spanish West Florida. Once Alabama became a state, the Baldwin County of the Mississippi Territory was divided between Mobile and Washington Counties. The present-day Baldwin County was then formed from the part of Mobile County east of Mobile Bay. Keeping this in mind, the residents of the modern Baldwin County in 1816 could be found in the census of Baldwin or Mobile County.
