"The Caribbean island of Barbados is a sovereign country and an Island State in the Lesser Antilles, and the only island situated in the Atlantic Ocean, far east of the other West Indies Islands. It lies about 168 km (104 miles) east of both the countries of Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines; 180 km (110 miles) south-east of Martinique and 400 km (250 miles) north-east of Trinidad and Tobago.
Although visited by Spanish navigators in the late 15th century, being claimed for the Spanish Crown, and first appearing on a Spanish map in 1511, the island has no Spanish heritage, even after the Portuguese briefly visiting in 1536.
In 1624, the first English ship, the Olive Blossom arrived, and Barbados was claimed for James I. In 1627 the first permanent English settlers arrived, and it became an English and later British colony.
Its capital Bridgetown is located in the south-western parish of St Michael and the other major towns include Holetown (Saint James); Oistins (Christ Church); and Speightstown (Saint Peter) and the other seven parishes are Saint Andrew, Saint George, Saint John, Saint Joseph, Saint Lucy, Saint Philip and Saint Thomas."
