The Battle of Callann 1261
The Battle of Callann was fought in August 1261, beside the Roughty River, in the townland of Callann (Collon) near the village of Kilgarvan, County Kerry.
The battle was between the Hiberno-Normans, under John FitzGerald, and three Gaelic (Irish) clans: MacCarthy, who held the Kingdom of Desmond, the O'Sullivans and the O'Donoghues; led by FĂnghin Mac Carthaigh, King of Desmond (ancestor of the MacCarthy Reagh dynasty); MacCarthaigh was victorious.
