- Beer houses, a type of public house, were legally defined as places where beer was to be consumed on the premises. They were created in the United Kingdom in 1830. The licence was bought from the government and they were not subject to police inspections in the way that public houses were. From 1869, the local magistrate licensed beer houses as well as the public houses.
