STANDARD FOR TRANSCRIPTION OF CENSUS REPORTS
Proposal by: George Blanchard
October 6, 2015
A unique implementation of standard WikiText to enable the profile of a head of household to be the repository of censuses, and their source references, that can be referenced and viewed from within every profile to which the census data and source references pertain. The entire methodology is believed to be compliant with the WikiTree Style Guide, and has two parts:
- 1. The head of household's census transcriptions, with references, are written within their biography in a standardized format, under a heading named ==Census==, and all other documentation continues to be referenced per the style guide under the heading named ==Sources==.
- 2. The biography of all other residents of the household use a simple standardized formula to reference and view the census transcriptions, and their source references, within the biography of the head of household.
Benefits of the methodology:
- 1. Believed to be compliant with the WikiTree Style Guide.
- 2. Virtually eliminates the probability of copyright infringement.
- 3. Encourages a standard for recording census data.
- 4. Eliminates duplicating census transcriptions and their references in the biographies of all enumerated household members.
- 5. Editing of census transcriptions, and/or their references, is limited to one profile page.
- 6. The standardized format of census transcriptions instantly reveals which people have not been linked to an existing profile.
- 7. Encourages research for enumerated individuals without existing profiles.
- 8. The concept can be easily described, facilitating comprehension of the methodology.
Limitations of the Methodology:
- 1. The methodology only works when all content under a heading is true for more than one person in a hierarchical order and all the content under that heading resides within the top level profile. Census reports fit that criteria perfectly.
- 2. Upon accessing the census data and source references on the head of household's profile, returning to the previously opened profile requires either using the browser's back button or clicking on the appropriate link embedded within a census report. This is probably not an issue for most users, especially if they rarely feel a need to view the full references.
Notes:
- 1.Is there a better suited name for the heading than ==Census==? Would ==Enumeration== be more likely perceived as representative of one or more censuses?
- 2.The methodology will work for content under other headings, but only if all content under a heading is true for more than one person in a hierarchical order and all the content under that heading resides within the top level profile. Usage of a top level profile is required to ensure the integrity and utility of the methodology.
