The borgesi of Corleone are the bourgeois class. Most are landowners and survive on unearned income brought in by their holdings. They are also generally citizens (if men over the age of 25) of the town with the right to bring lawsuits, vote, and otherwise participate in public life. The term was removed from public documents by 1861 with the formation of the modern Italian Republic, but remained a descriptive term on civil records such as marriages and deaths, until late into the 19th century.
