In 1824, upon the recommendation of Royal Navy officer and intrepid explorer, Matthew Flinders, the British Admiralty agreed that the continent known as Terra Australis be officially named Australia.
On 1st January 1901, the six British Colonies of New South Wales, Tasmania , Western Australia, Queensland, South Australia, and Victoria, federated to become States of the Commonwealth of Australia.
