Brown County is located near the geographic center of Texas. In 1856 Welcome W Chandler, John H Fowler, and others settled in the valleys of Pecan Bayou and Jim Ned Creek. The county was founded in 1856 and later organized in 1858. It is named for Henry Stevenson Brown, a commander at the Battle of Velasco. Its county seat is Brownwood. The Brownwood, Texas Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Brown County.
