- California was admitted to the Union on September 9, 1850 as the 31st state. The name California is most commonly believed to have derived from a fictional paradise Queen Calafia. It is the most populous U.S. state, home to one out of eight people who live in the U.S., with a total of 38 million people, and it is the third largest state by area (after Alaska and Texas). Its capital is Sacramento.
