The Canadian Machine Gun Corps was a corps created during the First World War in response to the necessity for greater control over machine guns. Formed as early as September 1914, initially termed Motor Machine Gun Brigades, formed from several privately funded machine gun batteries. Subsequently in 1917, the Canadian Motor Machine Gun Brigade transferred to the Canadian Machine Gun Corps. In 1936, during reorganizations of the Militia, the corps was disbanded, though machine guns were still considered a specialist weapon
