Cape Breton was a county in Nova Scotia on July 1, 1867, when the country of Canada was formed. (Find it on a map!)
It encompasses the city of Sydney, and the towns of Glace Bay, New Waterford, North Sydney, Sydney Mines, Louisbourg, and Dominion, and a large number of unincorporated communities (approximately 150 are listed here).
On August 1, 1995, Cape Breton Regional Municipality was formed from the Municipality of the County of Cape Breton, the city of Sydney, and the towns of Glace Bay, Sydney Mines, New Waterford, North Sydney, Dominion and Louisbourg.
