Category: Catholic Church
The Catholic Church is a hierarchical church, with individual parishes reporting to their dioceses which are led by bishops. Catholic dioceses are grouped geographically into archdioceses in turn grouped into Episcopal Conferences usually by country. The Conferences are administered from the Church's headquarters at the Vatican and led by the Pope who is the Bishop of Rome.
Wikitree categories do not use the term "Roman Catholic". The Catholic Church, for category purposes, includes all churches which are part of the hierarchy headed by the Pope and administered through the Vatican regardless of the style of Mass celebrated. It does not include churches not part of this hierarchy even if in full communion with the Church in Rome. For example, the following institutions should not be categorized under this category:
- the 23 autonomous Eastern Catholic Churches even though they are in full communion with Rome
- the Category: Eastern Orthodox Churches (also known as the Orthodox Church or the Orthodox Catholic Church),
- the Oriental Orthodox Church (also known as Old Oriental, Anti-Chalcedonian, Non-Chalcedonian, Pre-Chalcedonian, Miaphysite, or Monophysite Christianity)
- Assyrian Church of the East (also known as the Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East)
- Anglican Catholic Church (also known as the Anglo-Catholic Church)
- Old Catholic Church
- churches in the Independent Catholicism movement
- Liberal Catholic Church
- Brazilian Catholic Apostolic Church,
- Palmarian Catholic Church
- Irish Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church
Churches outside this hierarchy should be categorized separately according to the hierarchy of each particular institution with their top level category placed under Category: Catholicism.
