Chernivtsi (Ukrainian: Чернівці́, romanized: Černivci [tʃern⁽ʲ⁾iu̯ˈts⁽ʲ⁾i] Polish: Czerniowce, Romanian: Cernăuți; see also other names) is a city in western Ukraine. [1] In 1940, the northern half of was annexed by the Soviet Union, and currently is part of Ukraine.

  • 1787-1849: Austro-Hungarian Empire (Galicia)
  • 1812-1918: Eastern region (Bessarabia) annexed Russian Empire. Western region (Bukovina) remained in Austrian Empire.
