In response to the gold rush on Moresby Island in 1851, the British Colonial Office created the Colony of the Queen Charlotte Islands in 1853. James Douglas, the governor of the Colony of British Columbia, was made administrator. In July, 1863, the Colony of the Queen Charlotte Islands was amalgamated into the Colony of British Columbia.
