There are presently 21 counties in Sweden (Feb. 2018) and their function is to serve as administrative divisions of Sweden. Each county has their own coat of arms and an individual county code letter associated with the county, which is indicated on each county's own page/subcategory.

In modern times, two major mergers have been made;
January 1, 1997 the counties of Kristianstad and Malmöhus were merged and created the new Skåne county
January 1, 1998 the larger parts of Göteborg and Bohus county, Älvsborg county and Skaraborg county were merged to create the new Västra Götaland county.

This level of administrative unit was first established in the 1634 Instrument of Government.
