Bořivoj I, Duke of Bohemia is the first historically documented Duke of Bohemia, and all previous rulers are almost certainly legendary, particularly the earlier periods.

Cosmas of Prague in his Chronica Boemorum ("Chronicle of Bohemians" or "The Chronicle of the Czechs"). written in the early 12th century or about 400-500 years after some of these people are supposed to have lived, is the first written record of these early rulers.

Later authors built on these legends adding extra details or extra people.
