Department of Middle and Eastern Florida was established August 21, 1861. Embraced Middle and Eastern Florida. Extended October 26, 1861, west to Choctawhatchee River. Under the Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida April 7, 1862. Re-established April 9, 1862. Constituted a district to form a part of General Beauregard’s command, October 7, 1862. Divided into two districts November 4, 1862, to be known as Districts of East and Middle Florida, and merged into Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

Commanded by: Brigadier General John B Grayson, August 21, 1861; relieved October 10, 1861. Brigadier General E K Smith, assigned October 10, 1861; countermanded October 22, 1861. Brigadier General James H Trapier, assigned October 22, 1861; reassigned March 14, 1862; relieved by order March 19, 1862. Colonel W C Dilworth, assigned temporarily March 19, 1862; assumed April 1, 1862. Brigadier General Joseph Finegan, assigned April 8, 1862; assumed April 18, 1862.
