Died in Military Service, United States of America, American Revolution category. The American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), also known as the American War of Independence, was an 18th century war between Great Britain and its Thirteen Colonies (allied with France) which declared independence as the United States of America. Between 25,000 and 70,000 American Patriots died during active military service. Of these, approximately 6,800 were killed in battle, while at least 17,000 died from disease. The majority of the latter died while prisoners of war of the British, mostly in the prison ships in New York Harbor.[1]
