Category: Doig-176 Brick-Walls
There are plenty of dead ends in my tree where the record sources run out. The people listed below are the brick walls who should be able to be found in the records, somewhere...
2nd-Great Grandparents
- Charlotte Wheeler: inconsistent details about her place of birth and parentage - born about 1848 in Wellow or Bath, Somerset. Tentative parents identified, but not confirmed. SOLVED! thanks to a generous fellow Wikitreer who provided a different hypothesis to my tentative identification. The new hypothesis was consistent with DNA matches. She was illegitimate and her father is not recorded.
3rd-Great Grandparents
- Janet McFarlane: parents not certain. Born about 1808 in Perthshire or Stirlingshire, Scotland.
- Agnes Taylor: born about 1836, supposedly in 'Craigness' (Craignish?) to parents Angus Taylor and Mary Campbell. Residence given as Argyllshire when she emigrated to New Zealand in 1861. No obvious candidates found in christening records or Scottish censuses. SOLVED! Agnes was born in Renfrewshire but raised by her grandparents in Craignish after her father's mysterious death...
4th-Great Grandparents
- Elizabeth Rowney: born in Bedfordshire about 1803 and married twice. No obvious candidates in the baptism records but DNA connections suggest some possible related families.
- Caroline Elizabeth, wife of William Revell Vigers: her surname and marriage has not yet been found.
- James Thompson, merchant of Calcutta: recorded as the father of Anne Thompson but cannot be found in other sources. He may be fictional.
- Hugh Davy : born about 1776 in Devon, England; several possible candidates.
- Hannah England: born about 1808 in Walton, Somerset, England. Cannot be matched definitely to any of the England families in the area.
- Mary Ann Ward: born about 1802 in Northamptonshire, different birthplaces given in different records.
- Mary McFarlane: born about 1813 in Scotland. Her marriage is recorded and she is found in the 1841 census, but she disappears from the public record about 1843 after the charge of her husband's murder was dropped on a technicality.
Irish dead ends
- 2nd-Great Grandparents
- Essie Simpson: her death certificate says she was born in Rathfriland, co Down, Ireland and names supposed parents but there are no people of that name and age to be found in the area. Paper and DNA evidence suggests she was more likely to be the child of a different couple in Rathfriland.
- 3rd great grandparents
- Maria Grant: she was born in Tipperary, Ireland, but married in London. Possible parents identified but more corroborating evidence needed.
- Alice Leckie: born about 1806, probably in the parish of Kilmore, co Armagh, Ireland. Family name could possibly be more often recorded as Lackey?
- Mary Ann Henderson: probably a daughter of James and Anne Henderson of Ballytrue, Kilmore, co Armagh, Ireland, but not confirmed.
- Mary Ann Smith of Kilmore, co Cavan, Ireland: two or three possible parentages identified.
- 4th great grandparents
- Sarah, wife of Dudley Hampton
- John Bradley of Kilcronaghan, co Derry, Ireland
- James Campbell of Kilcronaghan, co Derry, Ireland, possily married to Anne.
- Thomas McDowell and Mary Dobson of Clonagonell, co Cavan, Ireland.
