Originally founded in 1855 under the name Donaldson Brothers, the company began service from Glasgow to South America using a wooden barque. Beginning in 1874, they began regular service to Canada. The company name was changed to Donaldson Line Limited in 1913. In 1916, the Donaldson Line formed a joint venture with the Anchor Line (called Anchor-Donaldson Limited) to operate the Glasgow to Canada passenger run. In 1919, Donaldson acquired the South American services of the Glasgow Steamship Company, and combined them with its own South American services under the name Donaldson South American Line. In 1935, the Anchor Line was liquidated, and Donaldson bought out Anchor's share of the Anchor-Donaldson Line and renamed it to Donaldson Atlantic Line. In 1938, the company name changed again to Donaldson Brothers and Black Limited. In 1966, Donaldson stopped their last passenger service, and stopped cargo service and sold their remaining ships in 1967.
